Making decisions for now and the future

Hey guys,

This week I have been thinking about options and making decisions and around relating them to my future self.

Often in life, we think about the present and in doing so we choose what is easy and comfortable right now. That is okay in some scenarios but we often don’t think about the person we are going to affect in the future with these decisions - our future self. Some decisions and choices we make in the present severely limit our options in the future and most can not be undone.

Therefore, a decision, as much as it is for the comfort and safety of right now should always have both the present and the future in mind. A failure in doing so can put our future self in a compromised situation.

I have been giving this a lot of thought lately and documenting my understanding and findings. I will be putting together a framework for better decision making and will share it with you in the coming weeks when it is ready.

Stay awesome and have a great week ahead 🙂

📝 Article - Gone for now, or gone for good? How to play the new talent game and win back workers. I found this article to be quite an interesting read in the reasoning of why people are choosing to leave and not partake in traditional jobs that offer little to no flexibility.

🎙️ Podcast - All The Hacks - Finding Happiness, Success and Deep Purpose. Behavioural social scientist Arthur Brooks joins Chris to explore happiness and the different types of intelligence. They also explore the hustle culture, the science of satisfaction, the reverse bucket list, the four good idols (friends, family, faith, and work) and the four to watch out for (money, power, pleasure, and pain).

✍️ Quote of the Week

When people prattle on about needing to find their “life’s purpose,” what they really mean is that it’s no longer clear to them what matters, what is a worthy use of their limited time here on earth—in short, what to hope for. They are struggling to see what the before/after of their lives should be.

Hey guys, This past week I have been actively thinking about flexibility. Having flexibility in life is like a superpower I didn’t know I needed or had. The COVID-19 pandemic, if anything, has taught people, myself included, that flexibility is not something to compromise on. What is prompting this? My workplace is forcing everyone back into the office for full-time hours - 5 days a week. Almost zero flexibility unless there is a special need. This is absolutely not something I want to do...

Hey guys, So this week I have been thinking about my identity. I am a man, a father, a husband, a project manager, a photographer, an Australian, a Pakistani and a whole bunch of other things … do you think these are too many identities? Unfortunately, almost all of us, identify with way too many things. We have too many anchors in life. Often we switch between these identities depending on our social circumstances and morph through them over the course of our lives. I have written an article...

Hey guys, Sorry, this week’s newsletter might be a bit morbid but this is an important one. I recently finished re-reading Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and I have written a short summary of this book which you can check out here (6 minute read). While going through this book a second time, I couldn’t help but ask myself some very basic but important questions: What is the meaning of MY life? What is truly important to me? What am I striving/working hard for? If I was to die in 3...
